Bread: Banana Surprise Loaf - April

Bread
2 cups flour (calls for all-purpose, I usually do half white/half wheat)
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 cup dates (optional -- I never have)
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 1/2 cups mashed bananas (about 3 medium bananas, fully ripe)

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg; add dates and toss lightly. Cream together butter and sugar; beat in eggs and lemon juice. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with mashed bananas; after each addition, beat until smooth. Turn into greased 9x5x3 inch loaf pan. Bake in moderate oven (350* F) for 40 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pan.
